Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow (Energy Geosciences)
Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow. The Berkeley Geochemistry group is seeking a talented postdoctoral research scientist to apply new opportunities for the structural analysis of clay minerals using transmission electron microscopy. Recent research led by Prof. Jill Banfield has shown that low-dose, high-resolution imaging and three-dimensional tomographic imaging offer unprecedented views into layer structure, stacking arrangements, and aggregate morphology of natural clay minerals. Complemented by theory and modeling, this project will advance our understanding of clay swelling and the roles of clay minerals in natural water-saturated systems.
What You Will Do:
Primary researcher on one project.
Work independently and in collaboration to achieve goals of the project.
Communicate regularly and work with supervisor and collaborators at all stages of this project.
Communicate results in manuscripts or journals.
What Is Required:
PhD in geoscience or relevant field.
Proven expertise in transmission electron microscopy.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an effective manner.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience in tomographic cryogenic electron microscopy, or of high-resolution electron microscopy data from crystals.
Knowledge of clay mineralogy and crystallography.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
Notes:
This is a full time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt from overtime
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
