Berkeley Lab is Bringing Science Solutions to the World, and YOU can be a part of it!
In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is synonymous with "excellence." That's why we hire the best - whether in research, science or operations. This is a great opportunity to bring your top-notch skills to bear in support of world-class scientific research that addresses national and global challenges!
Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division has an opportunity for an experienced Controls Engineer to lead the Beamline Controls Section of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Synchrotron user facility. The beamline controls section is responsible for a large number of LabVIEW based integrated control systems used on the different X-ray experiments associated with ALS beamlines. In this position you will supervise control software engineers and system designers in the research, development/design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of these control systems.
Specific Responsibilities:
Serve as the beamline controls section technical lead, supervising a group of control software engineers and system designers in the research, development/design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of over 100 LabVIEW-based beamline control systems used to control the optics and instrumentation for ALS beamlines, end-stations and associated facilities
Direct, organize, coordinate and support the effort to develop, install and maintain control software and hardware for ALS beamlines, end-stations and associated facilities
Interface with ALS scientists and management to plan control system upgrades, determine future control capabilities, and develop new control projects and their priorities
Participate in periodic internal reviews of the technology used to address the needs of future ALS beamlines.
Develop plans, budgets, and schedules that defines the technical content, scope, deliverables and completion milestones which are reviewed by ALS scientists and managers
Supervise the repair, corrections and modifications executed by the section members in order to keep user operations running smoothly
Ensure systems are debugged as quickly and efficiently as possible during beamline user operations (i.e. minimizing MTTR) and systems are maintained and upgraded during scheduled shutdown days (i.e. maximizing MTBF and up-time)
Design Motion control, data acquisition, vision control, data processing of multiple input and multiple output systems
Design a single integrated control system per beamline that allows further development of higher level scanning and tuning functions
Follow national and laboratory electrical engineering and installation build standards and techniques
Ensure staff members have the resources (computers, RAID storage, hardware spares, software development environment, software tools etc.) to develop controls software and support beamlines
Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity, fosters creativity and innovation, and ensures compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) and Berkeley Lab rules and policies by hiring, evaluating, managing and mentoring staff
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s in computer science, engineering, mathematics or other physical sciences, and/or or equivalent experience
Minimum of 10 or more years of experience working with control systems and related software in an R&D environment
Demonstrated knowledge in motion control, data acquisition, vision and instrument control.
Background in feedback control theory
Demonstrated LabVIEW software and hardware experience
Leadership/management experience with project teams
Excellent written and verbal communications skills and highly self-motivated and willing to look for and learn new technologies
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Advanced degree
Experience with synchrotron instrumentation control systems
Experience with IEEE-488, RS-232/485, real time systems, embedded micros, TCP and UDP programming, electronics, graphical user interface development
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
