Berkeley Lab addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Are you a network guru interested in combining your knowledge of networking with supercomputers?  Do you have an interest in high performance interconnects, Software Defined Networking and deploying the latest technology to help scientists solve critical problems?

The National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center, is the principal scientific computing facility for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy and a world leader in high performance computing.  NERSC is also a center of networking innovation and is the first to deliver new techniques such as Intrusion Preventions Systems and the Science DMZ model to maintain an open, high performance and secure network. NERSC's mission is to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery in areas such as global climate modeling, combustion modeling, biosciences, energy sciences, and astrophysics.

As a NERSC Network Engineer, you will help drive one of the world's fastest supercomputer centers! NERSC has installed 100G ethernet and FDR IB in a new state of the art High Performance Computing data center and needs networking expertise to utilize these resources and help develop and deploy the next generation of Networking technology. The successful candidate will work with scientists to understand their computing and data challenges and develop leading-edge solutions that fit their needs. This position will be filled at the Computer Systems Engineer (CSE 2 or CSE 3) level, dependent on experience.

NERSC is located in the Computational Research and Theory Facility (CRT) on the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) main campus right behind UC Berkeley and overlooking San Francisco Bay.

Specific Responsibilities - CSE 2:

  • Provide technical support and guidance on network design issues.

  • Install and maintain networking equipment.

  • Assist in the design, implementation and maintenance on more complex LAN and WAN Systems in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Analyze data network documentation and assist in communicating to management regarding the current operational status of networks.

  • Perform as one member of a 24/7 on-call network response team.

  • Work closely with the NERSC Computer Security Analysts to test and implement more secure ways to remotely access NERSC resources

In addition to the responsibilities above, the CSE 3 will:

  • Take the lead in a technology area such as Software Defined Networking, HPC interconnects, Optical switching or the next generation of Ethernet speeds beyond 100G.

  • Perform cost analyses and vendor comparisons to ensure cost-effective and efficient operations;  evaluate feasibility of various approaches, make recommendations as appropriate.

  • Lead the design, implementation and maintenance of more complex LAN and WAN Systems in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Design appropriate testing routines or scripts; may conduct more complex testing to meet specified requirements.

Additional Desired qualifications - CSE 2:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Good network performance modeling or benchmarking skills using tools such as 'iperf', 'ndt', 'owamp'

  • Experience with network security: configuring/maintaining ACLs, knowledge of firewalls

  • Network architecture and support - design, planning, documentation, integration and operational maintenance

  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking environments

In addition to the requirements above, the CSE3 will possess:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience and a minimum of 8 years related experience

  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking environments (OSI model, TCP stack, etc.)

  • Familiarity with IB, FC, RDMA, MPI and other network solutions in an HPC environment

  • Web programming and network tool design knowledge (Perl, PHP, Javascript/AJAX, XML), database knowledge (e.g. MySQL), traffic monitoring/management tools
