Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Plumber/Fitter to join the team.

 

This position will layout, fabricate, install, maintain, and repair plant piping systems, fixtures, and related components designed to transport a variety of liquid and gaseous substances needed for sanitation, industrial productions, fire control, or other uses.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Perform journey level plumbing, pipe fitting tasks 
  • Work from engineered/designed blueprints as well as verbal instructions and sketches received from scientific staff and work planning and control.
  • Prepare isometric drawings showing measurements and details of the layout obtained from blueprints and verbal instructions.
  • Install and repair the water, waste disposal, drainage, and gas systems in homes and commercial and industrial buildings. Plumbers also install plumbing fixtures—bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets, drinking water fountains—and appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters. Pipefitters install and repair both high and low-pressure pipe systems used in the heating and cooling of buildings.
  • Use manual and power operated tools to cut, bend, thread, groove, join, place and anchor building and research piping and tubing systems, solder,braze and mechanically fit metal tubing systems. Install, service and repair valves, strainers, regulators, backflow devices, plumbing fixtures (sinks/faucets/toilets/urinals/etc) and research apparatus. 
  • Modify and repair sanitary waste and storm drain piping systems.
  • Sprinkler fitters install automatic fire sprinkler systems in buildings.
  • Plumbers fabricate, install and repair process piping systems, as well as repair underground sanitary sewer systems.

 

What is Required:

  • Completion of apprenticeship or comparable industrial or military training, or 10 years of verifiable commercial plumbing experience.
  • Must have knowledge of plumbing codes, able to establish actual job requirements by discussing apparent needs with client, lead persons, supervisors, and designers, examining and defining structure and function of existing systems, proposing appropriate materials, work methods and system layout for review and approval.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to identify ratings, chemical handling/hazards, and mechanical functional characteristics. Must be able to measure and make arithmetical, algebraic, and geometrical calculations to compute total lengths, volumes and angular configurations as necessary to layout piping/tubing configurations and fixture placements.
  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds work at height; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, and under florescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, have manual dexterity in both hands, lift 60 lbs. to chest height. Able to communicate clearly over telephone and two way radio.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record keeping and communication, ability to quickly write presentable reports and memoranda on computer.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LBNL facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing store issues, safety program, and facilities design requirements and specifications will be required after employment.
  •  Isometric sketching.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) eligible for overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The hourly wage for this position is predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates. The salary for this position is set at $67.72/hour.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
