Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work at the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center. Reporting to the Group Leader of the BELLA Center, the primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to perform computational and theoretical research in the area of intense laser- and beam-plasma interactions and advanced accelerator concepts for BELLA Center’s programmatic R&D activities and projects.
Specific Responsibilities:
Investigate laser-plasma and beam-plasma instabilities relevant to the HEP application of LPAs, as well as assist in the design and development of staged LPAs.
Pursue forefront computational and theoretical physics studies in the areas of laser-plasma interactions, particle acceleration, and beam-plasma interactions.
Execute and/or modify simulation codes for the modeling of the laser-plasma accelerator, as required for physics studies and experimental modeling. These codes could be based on the PIC method for the short-pulse laser-plasma interaction and/or MHD models for the plasma formation.
Test, analyze, and improve the numerical methods.
Work closely with scientists, postdocs, and graduate students.
Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed-journal publications and in oral presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, and reviews.
Required Qualifications:
Recent Ph.D in Physics or related field.
Knowledge of laser-plasma interactions, plasma-based acceleration, and/or advanced accelerator concepts.
Understanding of advanced scientific computing techniques.
Demonstrated successful research through an excellent publication record on computational modeling and theoretical study of laser-plasma interactions, plasma, and/or beam physics.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
Notes:
This is a full time 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
