Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate. The China Energy Group conducts technical and policy analysis covering a range of topics, including industrial energy efficiency, end-use energy demand and energy supply trends and outlook, energy policy, and energy and emissions modeling of national and subnational energy systems for China. As a member of the China Energy Group, you will perform statistical, technical, and policy-related analysis, applying engineering and scientific concepts, with an emphasis on supporting the analyses related to aforementioned topics under general guidance on research direction by principal investigator(s). The position entails providing technical and scientific support to the team and working closely with Principal Investigators (PIs) at the China Energy Group leads to define the needs of the projects and identify opportunities for increasing the efficiency and robustness of processes through analytical and computational tools and methods.

What You Will Do:

  • Apply principles, theories, and/or technical concepts in science and engineering to perform research and analyses in the areas of industrial sector energy use, energy efficiency, and related greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Investigate, create and develop analytical methods and computational tools to improve the energy, economic and environmental analyses of energy efficiency technologies and policies.

  • Design, develop and manage tools to automate processes necessary for energy and economic analysis.

  • Collect and process data, construct detailed databases on industrial energy use, develop energy models, and provide analysis of data and information on cost, energy and resource savings, and implementation of efficiency technologies.

  • Conduct analysis on energy policies in China and across the world and prepare policy guidelines.

  • Contribute to and/or author conference papers, laboratory reports and refereed journal articles on industrial energy use, and energy efficiency topics.

  • Provide technical support for projects related to industrial energy efficiency with collaborators in China, including data-collection, processing, and evaluation. Work with Chinese colleagues and contribute significantly to overall project deliverables.

  • Develop and/or assist in developing presentations for conferences, meetings and workshops, and give presentations at conferences, meetings and workshops. Interact with other researchers within and outside of LBNL regarding research activities.

  • Provide information and consultation in response to research and information requests from outside the China Energy Group, Program, and Laboratory.

  • Assist the group leader, group members, and other members of the Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division at large with industrial energy efficiency policy, data compilation, and analysis.  

  • Provide technical and scientific support by developing a broad array of numerical models and analytical tools to address challenging technical questions to support solving energy policy issues in China.

  • Apply engineering concepts in conducting statistical, technical, and economic analysis in support of the development of energy efficiency policies in China.

  • Build and manage large databases for application in the analysis of technical and economic data.

  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of advanced computational tools that serve various technical and analytical requirements for energy analysis.

  • Write and review technical reports and policy documentation.

What Is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and or equivalent experience in engineering, energy, or related discipline and a minimum of five years of professional experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in working independently to undertake research and perform tasks as described in the Duties/Responsibilities section above.

  • Experience with a broad range of multi-disciplinary knowledge, analytical techniques and models, and tools needed for energy efficiency analysis, which include but are not limited to fundamentals of engineering, economics, and statistical techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative modeling and analysis and management of large datasets.

  • Fluent in both English and Mandarin written and verbal skills, ability to use research materials, models and tools in both languages.

  • Experience with Chinese energy end-use data, technologies and energy transformation processes for the purposes of the development of analytical tools and models.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Chinese energy systems, Chinese industry, and energy statistics.

  • Strong interests in energy efficiency topics and understanding of energy policies development process in China.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to identify and obtain information from diverse sources, collaborate with other researchers, present results at conferences, and write research reports in both English and Chinese.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively, providing, sharing and receiving creative ideas.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and or equivalent experience in engineering, energy, or related discipline.

  • Experience with conducting technical trainings in China.

  • Experience in managing or working in team settings to accomplish project goals.
