Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an opening for a Technical Health Physicist to join the Environment, Waste, and Radiation Protection Department in the Environment, Health, & Safety Division. The Health Physicist will provide technical technical support to resolve issues related to health physics, radiological materials and/or radiation generating devices as applicable to LBNL operations including hands-on support in the areas of dosimetry, radiation transport modeling, instrumentation, analytical and telemetry.
What You Will Do:

Provide guidance, direction and recommendations to scientific research and operations personnel regarding effective and compliant implementation of RPG technical capabilities (dosimetry, analytical, instrumentation, radiation transport modeling and telemetry). Provide technical guidance to RPG personnel in assigned areas to support radiation protection needs across the Lab.

Support the development of training to Lab personnel and deliver training to Lab personnel in the assigned area.

Develop and maintain close relationships with Laboratory personnel, anticipating their needs and supporting planning and implementing their objectives by furnishing radiation protection input.

Maintain and support the development of technical program documentation, software and hardware in assigned areas.

Operate, maintain and utilize equipment and software in RPG technical capabilities, including dosimetry, analytical, instrumentation, radiation transport modeling and telemetry.

Support the development and maintenance of RPG technical capabilities (dosimetry, analytical, instrumentation, radiation transport modeling and telemetry).

Review and update assigned procedures, policies and other documentation to ensure RPG programs reflect current regulations, relevant guidance documents, and safe work practices.

Evaluate performance of assigned technical programs to identify potential improvements.

Evaluate and optimize performance of software and hardware that supports RPG technical capabilities.

Review and analyze results of radiation detection and measurement equipment to ensure quality, procedural compliance, and best practices.

Independently perform audits and assessments of assigned areas and programs, identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
What is Required:
-
B.S in Physics, Health Physics or Radiological Engineering and up to 5 years experience; or M.S. and 1 to 3 years of experience; or PhD and up to 1 year of experience; or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Knowledge of radiation protection theories, principles and practices.

Experience designing, testing and calibrating complex instrumentation.

Experience with technical software used in research environments

Ability to solve a variety of moderately complex problems in assigned areas of responsibility, exercising judgment to provide solutions within established procedures and practices.

Ability to work under general supervision and apply knowledge of existing policies and procedures to analyze data and determine appropriate actions.

Ability to anticipate programmatic needs and assist in planning and implementing improvements and responses to regulatory changes in collaboration with other RPG personnel.

Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to successfully deliver customer service based technical support. Demonstrated computer literacy.

Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels of the organization.
Desired Qualifications:

Experience working at a DOE or federal government facility.

Experience with radiation transport computer codes such as MNCP or Fluka.

Professional certification, as applicable.

This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

The Technical Health Physicist is expected to pay $108,096.00-$132,120.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $96,096.00-$162,144.00 for the H10.2- Radiation Protection Spec 2 position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, while also aligned with the internal peer group.

This position will be required to work across LBNL site, inside and outside buildings and at off-site locations, including in the field. Access to construction and demolition sites is required. Exposure to hazardous materials and hazardous energy sources is likely. Exposure to sources of ionizing radiation and radioactive materials is likely. Security vetting for access to nuclear materials is required. Access to permitted hazardous waste storage facilities is required. This position fulfills an Radiation Protection Group role requiring emergency on-call duties.
