Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Technical Superintendent. This position reports to the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Technology Group Leader and is responsible for supervising the daily mechanical engineering activities of technical staff.


Specific Responsibilities:

Exercising considerable judgment and exerting significant latitude in determining objectives of assignments in accordance with standard Laboratory and Divisional policies, procedures, and regulations:

  • Supervise and lead technical staff for LBNL projects and programs in applying substantial knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical concepts, which require both standard and unique methods.

  • Plan and schedule work flow according to priorities. Interacting with both the technology group leads and project / engineering managers. Must interact on a daily basis to determine and define the overall project schedule, priorities and scientific objectives. Direct the efforts of technical staff in meeting set objectives.

  • Monitor the quantity, quality, and job progress as required. Must provide written and verbal updates as required for several parallel Engineering projects and programs.

  • Oversee and update as required the training and development of technical staff, in regards to policy and procedures associated with operations and associated systems. Interact and lead in providing updates and refresher training to technical staff as required. Advise and assist professional staff and make major innovative contributions to the technical efforts.

  • Supervise and maintain safety of assigned areas. Lead technical staff in the safe use of vacuum and electromechanical associated systems.

  • Attend the Mechanical Supervisor Steering meetings to report and provide updates on technical issues across projects and programs.

  • Coordinate the use of technical resources across the Mechanical Engineering Department and to acquire information and technologies from laboratory projects / programs.

  • Provide supervision and identify the proper technical resources and leveling of technical resources across the technology group.

  • Interact with subordinate supervisors, customers and/or functional peer group managers, normally involving matters between functional areas, other divisions or units, or customers and the Lab.

  • Maintain proper functioning and safekeeping of equipment and tools as required. Specify and obtain materials and equipment as required from both the Engineering and Scientific staff.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and word processors.

  • Supervise the activities of exempt and nonexempt personnel.

  • Serve on committees for the Engineering Division and the Laboratory as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 6-8 years related professional technical experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles and practices to the implementation of technical projects, or operational assignments with a high degree of complexity.

  • Experience in interpreting and translating objectives of job requirements into technical applications or operational concepts.

  • Proven collaboration skills with other scientists and engineers in defining goals and contributing to their realization.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Notes:

  • This is a 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position requires completion of a background check.
