Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division has an immediate opening for a Career-Track Computational Research Scientist to join the Center for Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA) to engage in research on the theory, design, and implementation of reconstruction algorithms applied to solving scientific and engineering problems that are of interest to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the leadership of a research team in developing and applying new original mathematics research for imaging reconstruction methods.

  • Apply expertise in contributing to theoretical analysis, algorithmic design and code development in several emerging areas of scientific imaging, in areas such as cryo-electron microscopy, single-particle diffraction, tomography, fluctuation X-ray scattering, and powder diffraction, with an emphasis on developing robust high performance scalable reconstruction codes.

  • Document work and results in the form of journal papers and conference proceedings.

  • Present work and results at scientific meetings.

  • Collaborate with other CAMERA scientists, sponsors and other institutions including DOE BES Light sources. Interfaces with Principal Investigators, program leaders, sponsors, external collaborators and stakeholders.

  • May direct the work of technical support staff or students.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or related fields or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a research team in developing and applying new original mathematics research for imaging reconstruction methods.

  • Demonstrated experience in the development of reconstruction algorithms for scientific imaging applications, such as cryo-electron microscopy, single-particle diffraction, fluctuation X-ray scattering, and/or tomography.

  • Demonstrates extensive expertise in  computational harmonic analysis, numerical linear algebra, signal processing, and optimization applied to inverse problems and scientific computing in general.

  • Knowledge of C++, MPI, OpenMP, and other parallel programming models.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing fast algorithms and codes on large, multi-core high performance computing platforms.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
