Berkeley Lab has an opening available at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division for a X-ray Microscopy (PEEM) Scientist with interest in soft x-ray spectroscopy and microscopy to work on the development and application of dichroism in x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM) to problems in magnetism, materials science, biomineralization, and microelectronics.

As part of the ALS Dichroism Program group, you will take charge of the aberration-corrected microscope (PEEM-3 endstation at beamline 11.0.1.1) to support and collaborate with the community of external scientists using the ALS. The ALS offers fantastic opportunities to develop a network of world class collaborations as well as your own research program using state-of-the-art instrumentation in a vibrant scientific environment.

The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 1,800 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with revolutionary x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team!

What You Will Do:

  • Establish day-to-day operations of the X-PEEM endstation at ALS beamline 11.0.1.1; maintain and upgrade beamline equipment as required to support ALS users and to meet emerging needs of the user community; and collaborate with the ALS user community in performing state-of-the-art spectromicroscopy experiments.
  • Document and communicate your work, including publishing results in peer-reviewed scientific and technical journals, and presenting findings at workshops and conferences.
  • Participate in and develop new collaborations and partnerships with existing and new ALS users and develop a professional network.
  • Serve the broader scientific community through professional activities such as: acting as an expert resource in scientific and technical areas; being a member of committees and working groups; being a reviewer for publications; or organizing conferences, workshops, or sessions in scientific societies’ meetings.
  • Embrace and practice concepts of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (IDEA) and Stewardship.
  • Practice Integrated Safety Management (ISM) in all aspects of your work.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in the physical sciences, chemical sciences, or engineering or equivalent experience, as demonstrated by broad knowledge of and experience in synchrotron radiation science and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated scientific publication record in a related field of research.
  • Practical knowledge of physics, materials science, or physical chemistry and their applications in scientific research.
  • Understanding of soft x-ray characterization techniques; demonstrated experience in the operation of complex research equipment and ultra-high vacuum environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effective and safe operation of scientific instruments.
  • Ability to work with and maintain effective professional relationships with scientific staff, technical staff, and with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and provide quality work on schedule.
  • Proven excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Well-developed analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Strong technical and scientific communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Flexibility to perform other duties as assigned/needed.

What We Prefer:

  • Experience with x-ray spectroscopy or spectromicroscopy, and their applications in magnetism, correlated electronic materials, biomineralization, and microelectronics.
  • Experience in other experimental techniques used in a relevant research area, such as magnetometry, charge/spin transport, thin film deposition or crystal growth, etc.
  • Experience in developing and troubleshooting experimental apparatuses, with emphasis on electron optics, ultra-high vacuum systems, and in-vacuum mechanical manipulators.
  • Two or more years of experience working with soft x-ray beamlines and endstations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and drive projects in an interactive team setting.
  • Basic experience in scripting or programming for data analysis.
  • Ability to write and update scripts and routines using IDL, Igor Pro, ImageJ, OriginPro, LabView, and python.

For full consideration, please apply with your CV, publication list, and a cover letter describing how your experience makes you a great candidate for this position by January 15, 2023.
