Geological Project Scientist
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Geological Project Scientist to join the team.
The role will work mainly with Dr. Qing Zhu, and have the opportunity to work with a larger collaborative group that observes the effects of experimental warming on soil biogeochemistry and synthesize FLUXNET and chamber CH4 measurements. After model development and evaluation, the researcher will perform regional to global scale simulations under various climate change scenarios to explore possible responses and feedbacks of ecosystem CO2 and CH4 emissions to projected climate change.
What You Will Do:
- Apply a global land model to explore the role of warming on microbial dynamics, soil organic carbon and nitrogen cycles, and CO2 and CH4 emissions, under current and future climate. The coupling of terrestrial carbon and nutrient cycles will be an important part of the analyses.
- Address the project needs for belowground warming SFA and methane emission projects.
- Fulfill the modeling tasks and analysis for belowground BGC and CO2&CH4 emissions.
- Design and carry out model simulations that address important questions regarding the role of soils in terrestrial responses to global change, including soil carbon dynamics and CO2 exchange and CH4 emission.
- Improve and apply mathematical models for temperate and global terrestrial processes.
- Evaluate biogeochemical interactions and their effects on carbon and energy exchanges with the atmosphere.
- Work creatively, independently, and productively.
- Work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.
- Author peer-reviewed journal articles and present work at conferences and meetings.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. (preferred), or equivalent work experience, in a closely related field.
- Scientific background in Earth System Science with knowledge of upland & wetland ecosystem ecology and soil science.
- Strong numerical modeling skills
- Demonstrated use of terrestrial biogeochemical models
- Ability to design model experiments, visualize large data sets, and analyze results.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver oral and written presentation of results
- Record of scientific publications
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and/or lead others in projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experience working in a multi-investigator team
- Conducted field, lab, or theoretical work related to the topic of this position
- Commitment to working safely
For full consideration, please apply by November 19, 2021.
