Berkeley Lab is Bringing Science Solutions to the World, and YOU can be a part of it!

In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is synonymous with "excellence." That's why we hire the best - whether in research, science or operations. This is a great opportunity to bring your top-notch skills to bear in support of world-class scientific research that addresses national and global challenges!

Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Molecular Foundry Theory Facility Staff Scientist. The Molecular Foundry at LBNL is a national User Facility for nanoscale science -- one of five Department of Energy Nanoscale Science Research Centers. A multidisciplinary research center at the forefront of nanoscale science, the Molecular Foundry is a knowledge-based User Facility that provides state-of-the-art expertise and instrumentation in nanoscale science in a safe environment. You will establish a world-class research program in theory and simulation of phenomena at the nanoscale. The Foundry’s Theory Facility aims to develop and apply advanced methods to predict and understand properties of nanostructured materials over a broad range of length and time scales. You will devote an equal portion of your time to your own scientific research program and to supporting the research needs of a diverse international user community. You are expected to establish and support your own community of users, who access the Foundry via a peer-reviewed proposal process, complementing and expanding the world-class environment of multidisciplinary research at the Molecular Foundry.

What You Will Do:

  • Build a world-class research program in theoretical and computational nanoscale science at the Molecular Foundry, complementing current capabilities and expertise in the Theory Facility.

  • Foster a thriving multidisciplinary user program through development of unique expertise and capabilities in theory and simulation relevant to the nanoscale.

  • Collaborate with other Facility scientific staff members to provide scientific support for users and develop the Facility for use by scientists (users) from other institutions.

  • Carry out active, original research; prepare scientific data for publication in refereed journals; and present findings at seminars and conferences.

  • Ensure efficient use of Facility time by coordinating scheduling with users and Foundry staff.

  • Provide users with support through your own efforts in the area of understanding and calculating phenomena relevant to the nanoscale and through training of or collaboration with users in this area.

  • Share in user-related operation, maintenance/administration, and development responsibilities within the Molecular Foundry Theory of Nanostructured Materials Facility.

What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or another discipline relevant to theoretical and computational nanoscience, or equivalent work experience in any of or a combination of these disciplines.

  • Extensive research experience and an established track record in nanoscale science.

  • Strong background in scientific and/or high-performance computing.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the desire to collaborate with multiple research groups across disciplines.

  • International recognition as judged by publication list, highly cited papers, invited talks at national and international meetings, prizes and awards.

  • High level of international recognition in areas related to nanoscale theory and simulation.

  • Demonstrated leadership of independent research and development work.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral or other research experience and an established track record in nanoscale science.

  • User facility experience and/or successful collaboration with experimental groups or across disciplines.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes: This is a career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

Requirements for application

  • CV
  • Candidate must describe their plan for building a world-class research program in theoretical and computational nanoscale science at the Molecular Foundry
  • Candidate must outline their plan for fostering a thriving multidisciplinary User program

This position requires completion of a background check.
