Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab's Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) division has an opening for a Research Physicist/Scientist to serve in a key role in the activities of the Accelerator Physics Group of the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS is a storage ring based light source that operates ~6000 hours per year and serves more than 2400 annual users. The position will include responsibilities and active participation in all major activities of the Group, including ALS operation, and development of near, mid and long term ALS upgrades.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the Advanced Light Source Accelerator Physics Group pursue Accelerator Physics studies towards optimizing the performance of the ALS.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the ALS accelerator complex is operating with optimal performance as well as safely, and reliably.

  • Actively participate in implementing planned upgrades effectively and carrying out accelerator R&D to develop future upgrades.

  • Help develop tools (diagnostics, modeling, operational analysis, etc.) for the ALS Accelerators.

  • Collaboratively work with Physicists, Engineers, and Technical Support Staff in support of ALS operations and improvements.

  • Prepare scientific papers and publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research at seminars and conferences.

  • Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. and or equivalent experience in Accelerator Physics.

  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Accelerator operations.

    • Experimental beam physics studies.

    • Development and implementation of new capabilities on an existing accelerator.

    • Charged particle beam modeling and diagnostics.

    • Development and/or utilization of computer codes for accelerator operation and optimization.

    • Theoretical investigation of beam behavior.

    • Data gathering and analysis related to the physics of beams.

  • Published record of research in Accelerator Physics.  

  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all members of ATAP including other scientists, post-docs, students, and technical support staff.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with an operational synchrotron light source.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Background in small scale project management.

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
