Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division has an opening for a Project Controls Analyst. You will apply project planning and controls expertise and professional project management concepts to scientific projects across the lab. This position reports to the Sr. Project Controls Analyst or Engineering Project Controls Manager in the Engineering Division Project Planning and Controls group.


What You Will Do:

  • Provide project planning, budgeting, scheduling, tracking, and reporting expertise in support of scientific Project Managers [PMs] and Principal Investigators [PIs] in support of various projects, including:

    • General Project Controls Group Support (BELLA Ion, ALS Upgrade, DESI, LCLS-II)

    • LZ Dark Ma (LUX-ZEPLIN)

  • Provide life cycle project planning and controls expertise from project initiation through completion.  

  • Manage and resolve conflicting obligations and priorities and assist PMs or PIs in the development of plans leading to the successful completion of key project deliverables and objectives.  

  • Work to prepare and coordinate project documentation, schedules, budgets, scope, funding/cost control, and reporting.  

  • Identify internal and external factors that could impact project objectives.  

  • Develop reports and presentations including those required for external Independent Project Reviews.  

  • Assure routine, timely, and accurate communications, both internally and externally with Engineering, Scientific Project Directors/Project Managers, Division Directors, Deputy Division Directors, external Sponsors, and the Laboratory Project Management Office.  

  • Provide project planning and development support for this DOE funded project that includes both domestic and foreign collaborators.

  • Provide guidance to the project team on the preparation of an appropriate level of project documentation and planning of schedules and budgets to support the review and analysis of the project by the funding agency and other stakeholders.

  • Establish the foundation for a properly graded application of Earned Value processes and practices during project execution.

  • Partner with Project Lead to be prepared to defend project planning and development in the areas of schedule and cost before DOE and other funding agencies and stakeholders.

  • Provide overall institutional support with assignments in support of EG Division Office and Project Management Office objectives.


What Is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree and a minimum of 2 to 5 years related or actual experience in project controls and planning.  

  • Knowledge of the organization's project/initiative requirements.  

  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting principles and computer based spreadsheet and report generation.  

  • Experience with cost/schedule software systems.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of DOE Order 413.3. PMBOK, and EVMS methodologies.  Proven experience and expertise with Primavera P6, Deltek Cobra, Excel, enterprise-wide financial software systems, work order planning systems, and other PM software packages.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • PMP or CAPM Certification from the Project Management Institute
