Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division has an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist to participate in the development of advanced magnet systems for accelerator science applications. You will participate as a member of the Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology, a research group jointly operated by the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) and the Engineering (EG) Divisions at LBNL, in support of magnet projects and programs aligned with the BCMT mission of advanced magnet development. This position will contribute to the superconducting magnet program (SMP), a research program within ATAP with a long history of innovation and record accelerator magnet achievements. The SMP is an integral part of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) recently established national Magnet Development Program (MDP), whose goal is to advance high field accelerator magnet technology for future colliders. You may additionally contribute to other projects at LBNL related to magnet technology, including the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project and undulators for free electron lasers.
Specific Responsibilities:
Conduct independent research, towards specific goals of the BCMT.
Participate in the development of critical R&D tools, in particular in design, modeling and analysis, which advance the mission of the BCMT.
Collaborate closely with partner laboratories and universities associated with the MDP to further advance magnet technology.
Collaborate with other members of the BCMT to fully leverage expertise and capabilities for advanced magnet modeling R&D.
Contribute to ongoing magnet projects in areas of design, manufacturing, tuning, and performance testing
Publish and present findings in refereed journals and conference proceedings.
Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. and or equivalent experience in Mathematics, Engineering, or Physics or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 2 years of work experience in two or more of the following areas:
Application of advanced modeling techniques applied to combined mechanical, magnetic, and thermal systems.
Application of FEA to superconducting magnet systems
Experience with the design and fabrication of magnet systems
Solid understanding of magnetics, structural mechanics, and thermal/cryogenic principles.
Published record of research in magnet design and analysis.
Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all members of ATAP including other scientists, post-docs, students, and technical support staff.

Notes:
This is a full time 2 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
Salary is commensurate with experience.

Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
