Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab has an opening for an experienced magnet scientist to participate in a lead role in the Superconducting Magnet Program (SMP), a research group within the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division. The SMP has a long history of innovation and record accelerator magnet achievements, and is an integral part of Department of Energy’s (DOE) recently established national Magnet Development Program (MDP). The primary role of the position is to participate in formulating magnet development strategy within the MDP and to provide leadership in implementing that strategy within the LBNL SMP group.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership as a member of the SMP in developing a focused strategy for the development of high field magnets for high-energy physics applications, in close coordination with the national MDP Director.

  • Conduct independent research, directly related to one or more major magnet development projects within the SMP.

  • Ensure that progress is efficiently and effectively maintained towards the goals of the program.

  • Participate in the development of critical R&D tools, including design and analysis, fabrication capabilities, diagnostics development, and magnet-testing infrastructure.

  • Participate in identifying infrastructure needs and priorities, and provide expertise in defining technical requirements for key upgrades that are needed to deliver on our research goals.

  • Contribute expertise, as a member of the broader Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology (BCMT), in magnet R&D to other projects and programs of strategic interest to LBNL.

  • Collaborate closely with partner laboratories and universities associated with the MDP to further advance magnet technology.

  • Publish and present findings in refereed journals and conference proceedings.

  • Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. and or equivalent experience in Engineering, Physics or related field and a minimum of 5 years of work experience in two or more of the following areas:

    • Superconducting magnet development

    • Superconducting materials and their applications

    • Accelerator magnet design and optimization

    • Advanced modeling techniques applied to mechanical, magnetic, and thermal systems

    • Supervisory and program/project lead experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, conducting independent research, leading a research project or program.

  • Significant published record of research in superconducting magnet technology.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all members of ATAP including other scientists, post-docs, students, and technical support staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well and lead initiatives in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with DOE Office of Science program offices.

  • Experience with project management roles in large DOE projects.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a (full time/part-time) career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
