Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division (CRD) has an opening for a UI/UX Developer. You will be a part of addressing the next generation of science research problems. High quality user interfaces and tools are now critical to all areas of scientific investigation. The Data Science and Technology (DST) Department, in the CRD at Berkeley Lab develops software and tools to enable scientists to address complex and large-scale computing and data analysis problems beyond what is possible today. DST engages in partnerships with scientists to understand their computing and data analysis challenges and develop leading-edge solutions that fit the needs of the scientists. Current research areas and projects include workflow tools, user-level abstractions for exascale data discovery, computationally driven discovery of new materials, processing pipelines for astronomical data, and using experimental data to understand the impacts of climate change. What You Will Do:

  • Join the research and development team on a wide array of research and development projects.  Working under broad supervision, this position will involve work in a results-driven research environment, performing a wide array of user-facing software development tasks including:

    • Conduct user research.   

    • Plan, code, and deploy web applications.

    • Develop web interfaces for browsing scientific datasets.

    • Develop and test interfaces.

    • Conduct continuous testing and integration.

What Is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and four years of related experience; at least three years experience as a software engineer, UI designer, or UX researcher.

  • Proficiency and experience in a high-level programming language.

  • Experience with user research methods.

  • Experience performing user needs assessments, designing user interfaces and translating user-provided requirements into robust end products.

  • Experience with HTML and CSS.

  • Proficiency with JavaScript and AJAX.

  • Experience with UNIX and/or Windows command line tools.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment as well as being able to work independently.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Python and Javascript based web frameworks.

  • System administration experience in current Linux, MacOS, and Windows variants.

  • Proficiency with web services technologies and REST.

  • Proficiency with a data analysis and visualization tools.

  • Experience with real-world agile build, test, and deployment practices.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment  based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA and KBase, 5858 Horton St. Suite 525, Emeryville, CA.
